The two graphs below illustrate the difference between where a light source plots in color space (its chromaticity plot) compared with what its spectral power distribution looks like, and, more importantly, how it renders color.
On the first graph, the two test viewing systems are plotted on a CIE 1976 UCS Chromaticity Diagram (our normal means of determinging compliance iwth ISO 3664).
The chromaticity values, and therefore the plots, are nearly identical.
This implies a high degree of visual agreement between these two locations.
The graph below shows three different spectral power distribution curves; CIE50 (in blue), Competitive Desktop Sysytem (in green), and GTI Desktop System (in magenta).
A common understanding is that the closer a pair of light source's spectral power distribution (SPD) curves track each other, the greater the visual agreement between colors viewed under those light sources.
In ISO 3664, CIE D50 is the SPD specified for light sources to emulate. Those areas where the test source SPD does not track the D50 curve closely indicate regions of the spectrum where color appearance will not be the same.
The graph below illustrates significantly different spectral curves for the two test sources suggesting differences in color rendition.
