ColorEyes Digital Gelcard
The ColorEyes Gelcard is a convenient tool you can use to gray balance your camera in the studio or on location. In addition to the neutral balanced gray patch there are 6 patches for fine tuning the color "look" of your images.
The ColorEyes GelCard is available in 4 x 6in or 8 1/2 x 11in sizes separately or as a Kit (includes one 4 x 6 and one 8 1/2 x 11in card). Included leatherette pouch with each.
How it works:
Gray balance is a critical component of digital capture. There are several gray cards now on the market that are pure gray. The ColorEyes Digital Gelcard is one that can not be said to be pure gray but there are some characteristics of it that no one else has tried to match. As photographers you are all familiar with, and practiced at using cto and ctb filters on lighting to create a warmer or cooler feel to an image.
The Digital GelCard is a full set of cto and ctb filters in a single capture. Shoot the entire card and click balance on the patches until you find the feel youre looking for. Change your mind? Click on another patch. Its so much easier and faster then gelling lights.
Gray Balance your camera:
Place the Gelcard in front of your camera. Be sure that it is lit by your main light source. Using the gray balance utility in your camera software, click balance on the large gray patch. If you are shooting untethered, fill the camera frame with the large gray patch and use the in camera utility to create a custom gray balance. You can now use this gray balance to test your other lights. Light the card again with each of your other lights. Note the variation from neutral gray of each light. This can be a clue for you to determine which lights to use, or which lights to upgrade.
Using the colored patches to modify Gray Balance: The three warm and three cool patches are loosely based on tungsten to daylight and daylight to tungsten conversion gels. Using these patches you can change the overall look of your image without having to gel all your lights. If you want a warmer look to your image, click balance on one of the cooler patches (1/8 1/4 or 1/2 Yellow). For a cooler look select one of the warmer patches(1/8 1/4 or 1/2 blue).
